Keeping your teeth and gums healthy isn’t as hard as you may think, but it does require some discipline and dedication on your part. Following these 10 simple tips will help you have the healthiest smile possible!

1) Brush your teeth twice a day

This is an obvious one, but it’s also a good reminder. If you’re not sure how often to brush your teeth, the ADA (American Dental Association) recommends brushing at least twice a day, for two minutes each time. This is to remove bacteria that may cause cavities and/or bad breath. It also helps keep your gums healthy by reducing plaque buildup. You should be brushing from tooth to tooth on all surfaces of your mouth: top, bottom, outside and inside. Brushing can be done with or without toothpaste; however, if you choose to use toothpaste, make sure it contains fluoride. The ADA also advises using a soft-bristled brush and scrubbing gently with circular motions. Flossing is important too! At least once a day flossing will help remove plaque between your teeth which can lead to gum disease. Be careful when flossing though! Don’t scrape your gums or poke yourself in the cheek with the floss while trying to get into those tight spaces between your teeth!
Mouthwash is another way to protect against gum disease.

2) Floss daily

Flossing daily can be the easiest way to avoid or prevent gum disease. When we brush, food particles often get stuck in our teeth, but when we floss, we are able to remove that grime and gunk from between our teeth. Not only does this help prevent tartar buildup, it also prevents bacteria from reaching the tooth’s surfaces that can lead to gum disease.
It is best if you use a strand of waxed dental floss. Make sure to do an up-and-down motion as well as a side-to-side motion. The brushing and flossing motions should meet in the middle of your mouth so there is no overlap. Brushing after every meal: Cleaning your teeth with toothpaste every day will not only leave them squeaky clean, it will also maintain healthy gums. Make sure to brush at least twice per day for two minutes each time!

A good diet is also very important for healthy teeth and gums. Get plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables each day (5-9 servings).

4) Drink lots of water

And if they find anything wrong with your mouth, like cavities or early signs of gum disease, they’ll give you treatment recommendations right then and there so you can get started right away.

7) Avoid sweets, sodas, and other acidic drinks
